STEM Engagment & Vertical Mentorship

Buoyancy and Density

Participating students will learn about the concepts of buoyancy and density. Students will design, build and test their own functioning boat. By the end of the session, students will be able to describe concepts related to volume, displacement, buoyancy and density.
There will be a kit distribution to participate. All required materials will be provided through STEM Illinois except for a computer and Wi-Fi (see flyer for more important information on technology requirements).

Hands-On Activities

STEM Illinois hosted STEM Saturdays are community-based academic STEM learning events for students and parents to learn together. They reach hundreds of students, parents, and volunteers and spark a passion for STEM learning through hands-on, project-based activities. Each STEM Saturday has a theme. During a STEM Saturday, a school or community center gym is transformed into a laboratory with 40 tables and 200 students. Students are divided into groups by age. Students build something related to the theme of that particular Saturday, applying the concepts they have just learned to real world situations.
